Scuba School in a Gentle Sea
by Bill Harrigan
Referrals are an excellent option for divers who have completed the classroom and pool sections of an open water scuba course in a cold climate or inland and want to make their open water dives in warm, clear water. The way it works is simple: your instructor refers you to a dive operator in the Cayman Islands. Generally this means you'll be making four dives in two, one-half day sessions. Since the course work is standard within each agency, your Cayman instructor will know exactly what you have learned and you will know what to expect from the instructor. It is best to call and make a reservation before you arrive on the island; most operators have toll free 800 numbers. Why freeze your buns off in six feet of visibility when you can enjoy the warm, clear blue water of the Cayman Islands?
The home study option makes it easy to take your entire open water certification during a Cayman Islands vacation. You can complete the book work before you arrive, so you don't have to spend precious vacation time in the classroom. Once you arrive in the islands, the entire open water certification course can be completed in as little as three days. And it's great fun, too!
Many people coming to the Cayman Islands are certified divers who haven't been in the water in years. Getting rusty is a problem all of us face and it's no big deal in the Caymans. Quick and easy refresher courses are available anywhere. Usually these are one-on-one or in very small groups and will restore your competence and confidence in a matter of hours. Why waste any of your Cayman dives worrying about your skills?
